Types of Traditional Dentures

At Fairfax Family Dental Care in Fairfax, VA, we offer two types of removable dentures:

  • Removable Full Dentures: Also known as complete dentures, full dentures are a removable option that can replace an entire dental arch. The denture consists of a gum-colored plastic base and natural-looking artificial teeth. Full removable dentures rest firmly against the gums with the help of a special dental adhesive.
  • Removable Partial Dentures: This type of removable dental restoration is appropriate for patients who are missing several teeth but still have some healthy remaining teeth. Partial dentures fit between existing teeth to complete your smile. They are usually held in place by metal clasps.

Understanding Partial Dentures What They Are and How They Can Help

partial dentures

If you do not have complete tooth loss, it's possible that you are a candidate for partial dentures.

Unlike complete dentures, partial dentures are designed to integrate with any remaining teeth in your jaw. Unlike dental bridges, they can replace many teeth in multiple areas of your dental arch.

Like other types of dentures, partial dentures are durable and are made of lifelike materials, so that you can enjoy everyday functions like chewing efficiently and speaking clearly once again.

We Also Offer Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures are held in place by dental implants. They have several advantages over traditional, removable dentures.

Improved Stability

Implant-supported dentures are firmly attached to implants that are surgically placed into your jawbone, so it is virtually impossible for your dentures to slip or fall out when you eat or talk. Meanwhile, traditional dentures held in place with adhesives or clasps can become loose or slip, causing anxiety or embarrassment.

Better Jawbone Health

The titanium dental implants, which act as artificial tooth roots, encourage healthy jawbone growth where a natural tooth is missing, preventing jaw recession. Traditional dentures cannot do this. Traditional dentures may also need to be periodically adjusted to accommodate the changing shape of your gums and bone ridge.

Easier Care

Finally, implant-supported dentures are much easier to care for. You can brush and floss implant-supported dentures just like natural teeth. Traditional dentures must be removed at night, brushed thoroughly, and then soaked in a cleansing solution. Because they are removed nightly, there is a greater risk of losing or damaging them.

Dental Implants Give Dentures Exceptional Stability

Dental implants are screw-like devices made of titanium or ceramic. They are designed to replace lost tooth roots and provide the ultimate support for crowns, bridges, and dentures.

Implants are especially beneficial for denture wearers because they provide important stimulation to the jawbone, preventing the atrophy that otherwise follows the loss of one or more teeth. Therefore, denture wearers find themselves needing far fewer adjustments when they choose to support their new smile with dental implants.

Dental implants are also known for their longevity. With proper care, they can last for the rest of your life.

A Closer Look at Implant-Supported Dentures

Once you are fully healed from implant placement (typically after three to six months), our dentists will attach your permanent denture. All steps of the implant-supported denture procedure, including implant surgery, can be performed by our dentists at our state-of-the-art Fairfax office.

Are Dentures Covered by Insurance?

Most insurance plans contribute to the cost of dentures. It's important to note that insurance does not cover implant placement, despite the significant long-term benefits of dental implants.

No matter which option you choose—traditional, implant-supported, or partial dentures—we offer two ways to help offset the costs. First, we can provide free consultations to new patients. We also accept CareCredit® financing, so that you can pay for your procedure in affordable installments with little or no interest.

Am I a Good Candidate for Dentures?

If you have lost several or all of your teeth due to injury, decay, or infection, you are probably a good candidate for this smile-restoring procedure.

Before beginning treatment, you must be free of gum disease and tooth decay. These conditions will need to be addressed before dentures can be placed.

Also, if you are receiving implant-supported dentures, you must have enough healthy bone tissue to receive dental implants. A bone graft may be needed before implant surgery can occur.

Bone Grafting Can Restore Your Candidacy for Dental Implants

The jawbone will shrink and change shape in the prolonged absence of tooth roots. Eventually, the jaw will no longer be able to support dental implants. If you have been missing teeth for a long time, you may need a sinus lift or bone graft (also referred to as ridge augmentation) to restore your candidacy.

Bone grafting involves placing donor tissue anywhere along either dental arch to repair recessed areas. A sinus lift is performed on the upper dental arch. It involves placing donor tissue in order to elevate the sinus membranes, making it possible to place implants without disrupting the sinuses.

Our dentists and oral surgeons offer both of these treatments at our Fairfax practice, so that you can have a single team performing preparatory work, performing implant placement, and providing your denture.

What to Expect When You Receive Dentures

During your free consultation, one of our dentists will conduct a thorough examination and discuss your goals. If you are interested in implant-supported dentures, he will review your x-rays and scans of your jaw to determine whether or not your jawbone can support implants. Your practitioner will also inquire about your budget before recommending a type of denture.

Traditional

  • Impressions: If you decide on a traditional full denture or partial denture, your dentist will take impressions of your smile. Photos will also be taken of your teeth and gums to ensure your new dentures look just like your natural teeth.
  • Fabrication: All information is sent to our trusted partner lab, where your custom restoration will be crafted by dental artisans to match the shade and shape of your natural teeth and soft tissues. The denture will be designed to fit snugly but comfortably. It can take several weeks for high-quality dentures to be fabricated.
  • Fitting: When your prosthetic is finished, you will come back to our Fairfax office for a fitting. At this time, our dentists can make any adjustments necessary to ensure a perfect fit.

Implant-Supported

  • Dental Implant Surgery: Dental implant surgery will be performed by a dentist at our practice. Four or more titanium posts will be placed into your jaw through incisions in your gums.
  • Abutments: After a healing period of four to six months, special connectors will be attached to your implants.
  • Denture Placement: After a short healing period, your new denture will be permanently attached to the connectors. You will be provided with realistic-looking, temporary dentures to wear in the meantime.

Is Denture Placement Painful?

No, it will not be painful, though you may notice some sensitivity. No matter which type of denture you choose, we will keep you comfortable and informed throughout the process. Here is a quick look at how we minimize discomfort when it comes to both traditional and implant-supported dentures:

Traditional Dentures

Complete dentures and partial dentures are not painful to place. They may take some time for you to get used to them, but we can recommend creams to make wearing them easier. Your jaw will change over time, and when your dentures start feeling uncomfortable, we are here to provide adjustments to restore a comfortable fit.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Thanks to local anesthesia, placing implants and implant-supported dentures is not painful. If needed, we can also provide sedation for added comfort. You may feel some sensitivity as you heal, but you can use over-the-counter medications recommended by our dentists to control discomfort. Don't forget to follow all post-placement instructions, such as eating soft foods, to maintain your comfort and expedite healing.

Put Your Oral Health First At Our Dentistry Practice

Dentures don't just look good. They can also improve your oral health and overall health.

Dentures make it possible to eat a varied and nutritious diet. They may also make you feel more like smiling and laughing, which can do wonders for many aspects of your health.

Because implant-supported dentures preserve your natural bone structure, they can keep your jawbone from receding. These dentures prevent changes in your facial structure, such as a sunken appearance or premature aging.

Still considering your options? We offer complete dentures, partial dentures, and implant-supported dentures at our Fairfax dentistry office. To find out if you're a candidate for one or more of these solutions, contact our caring team online or call

The Truth About Brushing With Dentures

/

Many patients may think that they no longer need to brush if they have lost all their teeth and replaced them with dentures. However, we don't just brush to clean our teeth. We also brush to keep our mouth free of bacteria, our tongues clean, and our gums from experiencing periodontal disease. By using a modified brushing technique after receiving dentures, you can protect your oral health.

Dentures FAQ

How Long Do Dentures Last?

Usually, dentures can last for about five to 10 years.

You can maximize their lifespan by caring for them properly and consistently. Our dentists are happy to offer tips and instructions to guide you.

What Happens If I Have Decayed or Damaged Teeth?

It's typical for dentures patients to still have some teeth left. If those teeth are healthy, you may only need partial dentures. However, if they are decayed or damaged beyond repair, we can carefully extract them before providing dentures.

Do I Still Need to Visit the Dentist After Getting Dentures?

Yes, you will still need to see us for your regular appointments. In addition to keeping your mouth healthy, we can assess the condition of your dentures to determine if they need repairs or replacement.
